Prodigal Son Part II

There are two learning points I want to emphasize from this parable (there are many).

When we look at the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Doris reminded us of the Father’s love and His grace. Grace was afforded to the son and it gives us comfort in the knowledge that God loves us no matter what. As Doris emphasized Grace is afforded to us when we repent of our wicked ways and turn back to God.

However, repentance is a humbling experience. Like the prodigal son, he turned back and humbled himself. Humbling of oneself is probably the most difficult part of repentance because it is admitting you are in the wrong and lowering yourself. We see that the son humbled himself in the scripture “I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants,” and it was the father who exalted (put him back in honor) the returning son, not himself, “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.

Today, it is often pride that stops us from truly repenting. I can imagine the story another way around.

I have sinned and squandered all my money, but he’s my father and I did not choose to be born therefore, he has a duty to love me and protect me. It’s his fault I took the money and wasted it. He should have taught me better. So let me go back and see if I can get more money.

I have seen this attitude in people today, I have even had this attitude myself, and we often have this attitude towards God, which is why many fall into the same habits and patterns.

So, to emphasize, true repentance should result in humbleness towards God, and it is God who will exalt you. Like it was the father’s choice to clothe his son in the best robe and kill the fattened calf.

The questions I want to leave you with today:

When you seek repentance, are you going to God in humbleness?

Do find yourself blaming everyone for the sins in your life or are you taking ownership?

Thank you , this is a good point of view , what attitude are we resenting with ? True repentance comes from a humble heart

Indeed. It is only true humility that can lead us to true repentance. May God help us all.
