My dad often spoke about moving to Africa when I was growing up. Soon after I got married, my dad sold his house and said he would be moving to Ghana before I got back from my honeymoon.
It dawned on me that I would miss my dad, even though he spoke about moving to Africa for at least the last 20 years. You never really appreciate or miss a person until they go.
Jesus has been predicting his death and that he was going to leave the world. As you read in yesterday’s devotion, it did not dawn on them the gravity of the situation of their teacher Jesus leaving them. However, Jesus promises the disciples another helper (the Holy Spirit):
Jesus Promises Another Helper John 14:15-18
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray for the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
Let us see what Jesus says about the Holy Spirit:
- He will convict the world of sin,
- He will convict the world of righteousness,
- He will convict the world of judgment.
- He will guide you into all truth
- He will tell you things to come
- He will glorify Jesus
- He will take of what is Jesus’ and declare it to you.
Have you felt uncomfortable doing something you know is wrong? It’s the Holy Spirit within you that convicting you of the sin.
Have you heard a sermon, or read a scripture, which has brought you a revelation of what God is doing in your life? It’s the Holy Spirit guiding you in truth.
Have you experienced healing? It is the Holy Spirit taking what is Jesus’ and declaring it to you.
Have you had a prophecy or dreamt of a dream that has come true? It is the Holy Spirit telling you of the things to come.
It is the Holy Spirit who draws you to God as John 6:44 says
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
Do you have an urge in your spirit to connect with God? It is the Holy Spirit drawing you to the Father, do not resist, allow yourself to be drawn to God.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [c]will take of Mine and declare it to you.
